Job Title: Teaching Assistant

Location: 924 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, D.C.

Job Type: Full-Time/Part-Time (depending on the number of subjects taught)

Reports To: Principal and Assistant Director

Salary: $44k per school year (August 16 to June 15). Commensurate with experience.

Position Overview:

Waterfront Academy, a Spanish immersion Montessori school rooted in the Catholic tradition, seeks a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to support our lead teachers. The ideal candidate will work closely with the lead teacher to create a safe and nurturing learning environment, assist in classroom management, and provide individualized support to students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Lead Teacher:

    • Assist the lead teacher in daily classroom activities and instructional tasks.

    • Help in preparing and organizing learning materials and resources.

  • Maintain a Safe and Healthy Learning Environment:

    • Ensure that the classroom environment is safe, clean, and conducive to learning.

    • Monitor students to ensure they follow safety guidelines and procedures.

  • Assist in Classroom Management:

    • Support the lead teacher in managing student behavior and maintaining a positive classroom atmosphere.

    • Help in implementing classroom routines and procedures effectively.

  • Support Individual Student Needs:

    •   Provide one-on-one or small group assistance to students as needed.

    •   Help students with their academic and personal development by providing encouragement and support.

    •   Assist in observing and documenting student progress and behavior.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in education or a related field is preferred.

  • Experience working with children in an educational setting is a plus.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with the lead teacher and other staff members.

  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting children’s learning and development.

Working Conditions:

  • The position involves working in a classroom setting with primary or elementary-aged children.

  • The role may require outdoor activities, field trips, and other hands-on learning experiences.

  • Teachers may need to lift and move educational materials and furniture as part of classroom setup and maintenance.
